My
interest in clay as a material started from its traditional associations
with sculpture. Inspiration came from natural forms in general. I established
a visual vocabulary of shapes, colour and texture which, although close
to my source material, enabled me to express and explore personal concerns.
I want my pieces to have a sense of life and they are sometimes seen by
others as 'invented living creatures'
I feel overawed by quantity where counting no longer make sense. By unrepeatability
within such a quantity. By creatures of nature gathered in herds, droves,
species, in which each individual, while subservient to the mass, retain
some distinguishing features. A crowd of people or birds, insects or leaves,
is a mysterious assemblage of variants of a certain prototype. |

fired red earthenware 76/76 inches
A crowd of people or birds. A riddle of the nature's abhorrence of exact
repetition or inability to produce it. Just as the human hand cannot repeat
its own gesture. I invoke this disturbing law, switching my own immobile
herds into that rhythm.

I once observed mosquitoes swarming. In grey masses, Host upon host. Little
creatures in a slew of other little creatures. In incessant motion. Each
preoccupied with its own spoor. Each different, distinct in details of shape.
A horde emitting a common sound.
Where they mosquitoes or peoples? |
