Life
is a game played by unseen hands with ambiguous rules and unfathomable aims.
Our lives seem manipulated by a higher authority with its own humorous quirks.
We tiptoe through, hoping not to be noticed, not tempting fate, constantly
trying to reconcile intention and outcome. These ideas drive the concepts
behind my ceramic sculptures, which are narratives, rooted in games, an
expression of the dynamics that exist when we juxtapose strategy and lottery,
chance and design. When designing my 'games', I enjoy the challenge of analysing
techniques, and the properties of a variety of media to select that, which
most appropriately conveys my idea.

'Farmer's
In His Den', uses unfired clay to express the erosion of farming communities
and the rural way of life. The 'farmer' is trapped in his condition, surrounded
by the standing stones of agrarian worship. Exposed to the elements, they
disintegrate and become the bricks of urban development.

The
board is the arena in which we exist and function, the ground along which
we chart our course. The wire mesh describes the grid structure of the game
board, a 'drawn' representation that speaks of pathways and patterns. In
the ceramic grid beneath, are formed the bricks of urbanisation. |
