.Julie Leahy

My work is thrown, coiled, press moulded in various combinations. I use T material and porcelain mixed, burnished and bisqued. I then smoke fire and polish with wax. For additional colour I use natural earth pigments.

The forms I choose represent entrapment, secrecy, danger, privacy, change, growth and movement, thematic elements that relate to the human condition. The forms reflect my changing personal narrative. They constantly evolve and I use them as a metaphor to my own emotions. My main objective is to represent feelings in the language of form, bringing together the aesthetic with the emotional. I want a dialogue and relationship with the viewer to provoke different thoughts and responses.

Fire in nature can be a cleansing process, yet also a powerful destroyer. The markings caused by nature are not applied. The surface qualities in nature have a harmonious relationship with the object, happening over time. Smoke interacts with the surface in an uncontrived way.

The surfaces of the pieces still have a sensuousness that triggers desire to touch and caress. A direct stimulation of the senses. You can stroke the outside but a rough intimidating edge protects the inside and entry is denied.
