I make sculptural work that is intensely human and intensely private because I believe that only through the truly personal can the artist strike a universal chord. My ceramic dresses are autobiographical, exploring the sense of an absent presence that accompanies bereavement and the point at which something begins to fall apart while still holding together. My work contains the porcelain trace of the organic materials I use, providing me with a material metaphor for the ideas I am exploring. Christian Boltanski claims that in order to really move people, one needs to make work that places itself between art and life so that people are not sure what they are looking at and that this prompts involvement and response. I want my work to provide a quiet thinking space and invoke profound questioning . A permanent impression rather than a loud bang.
