Carys Davies'S WORKS
ARTIST STATEMENT
I make bowls, small and large, metaphoric vessels for people to own and use . These bowls are a thin skin between inside and outside, where I try to bring together old and new, rough and smooth, public and private, science and art, creating something positive, something integrated – enjoying the way each bowl is different, each bowl is valid.
I throw in porcelain. It has character – it is like working with a partner, not a tool. I like its contradictions, its memory, its beauty. I glaze inside and out, using contrasting shiny and rough glazes, with an unstable base – sometimes showing the marks of making, sometimes protected by shards.
My work is made through a series of processes that build on accidents, on the particular characteristics of each piece, so that the final bowl emerges organically.
