ARTIST STATEMENT

I can best describe my work as domesticity ‘gone wrong’. By making and then subverting tableware I convey a sense of loss within the domestic sphere. Through the various manipulations that the pieces have undergone, they evoke a sense of weariness and longing, yet despite the fact that the tableware is crushed and damaged, the individual objects still soldier on.
Using unglazed high-fired bone china combines naked rawness with an almost waxy finish, creating objects that are simultaneously exposed and contained. I feel that their fragility, ineffectual repair, and the pathos of the slumped forms combine to imbue the pieces with an emotional resonance, permitting others to dwell on their own lives and thoughts.
