ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a ceramicist, a technician, an artist,  perhaps even an architect.

My first experience with clay was an epiphany, it gave me new hope. Clay was a new stimulus, a raw ingredient through which I could shape and channel my emotions. This cathartic act of creation enabled me to find a fresh path in life. Clay offers endless possibilities but the confinement of discipline is also an inspiration.

My ceramic ‘buildings’ encase ready-made ceramics which others discard, they explore ideas paradoxically of entrapment and freedom. The ‘buildings’ reflect my thoughts on social discrimination, housing, capitalism, feminism and art. These ceramic building blocks are symbolic of my genetic make up and each one has a separate strand of information, which, like DNA, can only be understood in conjunction with the other parts.
