harrow ceramics degree show 2009 at the university of westminster
Introduction
The number ten is a Pythagorean symbol of perfection and completeness, and although I would not claim that the ten students graduating are actually perfect there has been a sense of unity and cohesion which has been fulfilling and refreshing in the ceramics department this year.
Despite the tribulations and shock of the impending closure of the course the year has been a happy one in the tent; our temporary abode since the fire of 2007. In fact it is difficult to recall that this fabulous group of students were at home in the old ‘Harrow’ studios because they have made this space so much their own.
The level of ambition is reflected in the way that students have spread and colonized areas to work in, scale never being impeded by the restrictions of an individuals workspace. They were to be found working in the glaze room, the throwing room, on the kiln site, occupying odd corners…. even the back of the shed, and this was in addition to their very own studio. This years graduates were straining at the seams of what was possible, reveling in the fabulous kilns, becoming more critical and more ambitious as all the strands of the course came together for their degree show.
And so I remember this ten as a special group of individuals who have striven in their final year to achieve their dreams. It has been a time when year meetings have been accompanied by laughter and fortitude as well as tears and courage. Never before have we been able to come to agreement about sharing space and opportunities so readily, and as with every year, never will there be one quite like 2009.
Ten implies that there is a completeness of order, that there is nothing lacking and nothing over, it signifies that this cycle is complete and as such I know that all our students now have brilliant futures ahead of them.
The Course team and I are proud of the achievements of the class of 2009 and as such wish these ten talented individuals the very best of luck in all their endeavors.
