Miriam Newland'S WORKS

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is figurative and explores how we, as humans, are composed, both physically and emotionally; how personality and identity are laid down by life experiences, like the geology of humanity.

Whilst I aim to allow my pieces to become a mirror for others I can only articulate from my own personal story and physicality, thus it is my body that acts as my canvas, my template.

The collection of found objects and waste materials reflect those experiences that we do not choose. By then selecting and manipulating the order and manner in which I use them I am able to inform the outcome. This process embodies my belief that although you cannot always choose experiences and events, you can choose what you become as a result: you can ‘make yourself’.

I hope that by representing ideas and feelings through my body, I will enable people to find a connection with these concepts via their own body and emotions.
